Agents that pay and get paid

Which protocol and network rails will agents actually use to pay merchants, APIs and each other, and who governs them?

Why it matters

If agents are going to buy things or pay per API call, a builder needs to know which rails merchants, card networks and wallets will accept, how users authorize spending, and who sets the rules. Picking the wrong rail could mean building twice.

State of play

Newest first. Each claim is our summary of the linked primary source, with a short quote from it.

The Linux Foundation says 40 organizations have joined the x402 Foundation since April, as it announced the foundation operational with the x402 protocol contributed by Coinbase.

Since the Foundation's intent to launch in April, 40 organizations have joined as members.

What it does not show: Membership is not deployment: the release gives no usage figures.

  2. AnnouncedJun 10, 2026Source

Visa announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to bring Visa payments into agentic commerce across OpenAI's products.

Visa (NYSE: V) today announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to enable secure Visa payments within agentic commerce, enabling seamless and trusted payments across OpenAI.

Google says it is donating the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) to the FIDO Alliance so the protocol stays platform-agnostic and community-led.

Transitioning ownership to the FIDO Alliance ensures AP2 remains platform-agnostic and community-led, while accelerating adoption of secure agentic payments.

What it does not show: AP2 v0.2 ("Human Not Present" flows) shipped on GitHub the same day; the post names no production deployments.

  5. DocumentedApr 17, 2026Source

The maintainers of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (OpenAI and Stripe) released spec version 2026-04-17, rolling up the changes made since version 2026-01-30.

This release promotes the accumulated unreleased ACP changes since 2026-01-30.

What it does not show: A changelog entry: it does not show which merchants or agents run this version in production.

  6. DocumentedDec 11, 2025Source

The x402 team released x402 V2 and says the protocol had processed over 100M payments across APIs, apps and AI agents in its first months.

In just a few months, it has processed over 100M payments across APIs, apps, and AI agents, powering everything from paid API calls to autonomous agents buying compute and data on-demand.

What it does not show: The payment count is self-reported, with no split between agent and non-agent payments or by value.

What would change the picture

Signals we are watching for. Our own reading of where the thread could go: not predictions, and not sourced claims.

  • AP2 (under FIDO) and x402 (under the Linux Foundation) publish a joint or cross-referenced spec for the same payment flow Would suggest: the competing agent-payment standards are converging instead of splitting the market
  • A card network publishes agent-initiated transaction volumes or names merchants processing them in production Would suggest: agent payments moving from pilots to infrastructure
  • OpenAI ships a Visa-backed agent checkout in ChatGPT or its developer platform Would suggest: card-network rails winning inside the largest consumer agent
  • x402 Foundation members other than Coinbase report settled payment volumes Would suggest: x402 usage spreading beyond its originator
