Cohere expands its Canada plan: over C$4 billion and 1,500 roles by 2031

Cohere says its effort, begun in 2024, should put more than C$4 billion into R&D and AI infrastructure in Canada through 2031 and add over 1,500 jobs, about 1,000 of them technical, plus more than 250 paid student roles by 2029.

Why it matters: Sovereign hosting is turning into a sales line, not just policy. Canadian buyers weighing where their models run can ask Cohere which parts are already built and which are still planned.

TechCrunch reports Slok's note finds flat profit margins and revenue per worker across the S&P 500 minus seven tech giants. A Hacker News thread on it drew 205 points and 194 comments.

Why it matters: If your AI business case rests on margin gains, expect to be asked for proof. One economist's note is not a study; check your own unit metrics before and after rollout.

S&P moves Meta's outlook to negative, doubting it can monetize its AI spending

S&P revised Meta from AA- stable to AA- negative over elevated capex and negative free cash flow, CNBC reports. Meta expects full-year capex of $135 billion to $145 billion and disputes S&P's view.

Why it matters: Credit raters, not just stock investors, now question whether AI spending pays back. When a vendor's funding tightens, ask what that could mean for its prices and roadmap.
