Australia National AI Plan
Australia's national AI strategy with three goals: capture the opportunity, spread the benefits and keep Australians safe. Instead of a standalone AI act with the 10 mandatory guardrails proposed in 2024, the government will rely on existing laws (privacy, consumer, copyright and sector rules), clarify them where needed, and set up an AI Safety Institute to advise on gaps.

What this means for you
If you build AI
- There is no AI-specific act in Australia; the proposed mandatory guardrails for high-risk AI are on hold.
- An AI Safety Institute is to monitor the technology and advise on gaps in the law.
If you deploy AI
- Existing laws still apply to AI use: privacy, Australian Consumer Law, copyright, anti-discrimination and sector rules.
If you use AI
- Protection comes from existing laws for now; the government may make targeted changes later.
