Safe Social Media Act (Bill C-34): AI chatbot duties
A federal online-safety bill. It would create a Digital Safety Act and a Digital Safety Commission. AI chatbot services would have to reduce the risk of the chatbot sharing harmful content or behaving harmfully, and be open about their reporting thresholds when a user may harm themselves or others. Social media services would label synthetic content and keep users under 16 off their services.

- Plan for transparency about how your chatbot handles crisis situations, such as a user saying they intend self-harm.
If you deploy AI
- If you offer a public-facing chatbot, watch the final definition of 'AI chatbot service'. It decides whether the duties reach your business.
If you use AI
- If passed, chatbots in Canada would have to reduce harmful outputs and say how they handle crisis conversations. Under-16s could not hold social media accounts unless a service is exempted.
