Singapore ban on election deepfakes of candidates
Amends Singapore's Parliamentary Elections Act and Presidential Elections Act. From the issue of the Writ of Election to the close of polling, it bans publishing online election advertising that is digitally generated or manipulated to realistically show a candidate saying or doing something they did not say or do. It covers AI and non-AI editing.

What this means for you
If you build AI
- Singapore has no general AI law; this is a targeted election rule that covers content made with AI or with ordinary editing tools.
If you deploy AI
- During a Singapore election period, online election advertising must not include realistic AI-made or edited depictions of candidates saying or doing things they did not.
If you use AI
- The ban covers AI deepfakes and also non-AI edits such as splicing and dubbing, from the Writ of Election until polls close.
- Satire and memes that would not mislead a reasonable person about what a candidate really said or did are not the target, the minister told Parliament.
