Colorado AI Act (SB24-205)

Colorado's 2024 law required developers and deployers of high-risk AI systems to use reasonable care against algorithmic discrimination, with impact assessments and notices. Its start was pushed from Feb 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026, and in May 2026 the legislature repealed and reenacted it as a narrower disclosure law (SB26-189) that starts Jan 1, 2027.

What this means for you

If you build AI

  • The 2024 duties for high-risk AI developers (reasonable care, impact-assessment support) are being replaced; plan against SB26-189 instead.
  • From Jan 1, 2027, SB26-189 asks developers to give deployers documentation on intended uses, training data categories and limits.

If you deploy AI

  • The SB24-205 risk-management program and impact assessments are not the target any more; SB26-189's notices and human review are.
  • If you started SB24-205 compliance work, map it to SB26-189 duties that apply to decisions made from Jan 1, 2027.

If you use AI

  • The original anti-discrimination duties for high-risk AI in Colorado did not take effect as written.
  • From 2027 you get notices, explanations after adverse decisions and a right to ask for human review under SB26-189.
