Preprint: at Volvo, off-the-shelf agent harnesses cut monthly test costs 3-66%

Researchers compared Volvo Group's in-house GUI-testing harness with Claude Code and OpenCode, keeping MCP tools and models the same. On infotainment tests success matched, but inference cost per task was 2.6-10.7 times higher.

Why it matters: Counting engineering effort, a nightly regression suite cost 3-66% less a month, the authors report. Testers still wanted to inspect the agent's actions.

Rivian plans to let third-party AI agents run in its cars, but not drive them

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said at TechCrunch Disrupt that its cars will be able to run agents from companies like Anthropic. He gave no date. Its in-house agent routes requests between on-car and cloud models.

Why it matters: Scaringe said vehicle-level controls such as braking and steering are not being handed to an agent: a clear line between assistant tasks and safety-critical systems.

Engineers had GPT-6 Astra drive a Corolla to an In-N-Out window, Wired says

Three engineers linked the model to cameras and power steering, with a safety driver ready to brake. On their DrivingBench course only Astra finished; Claude Fable 5.1 made it 45% of the way and Grok 11%.

Why it matters: General models are starting to act in the physical world, and the engineers told Wired careful prompting got past the models' initial refusals.
